8 Friendsgiving outfits

No dress code, which is the nice part and the tricky part. Here are eight that look like you tried, but not too hard.

Going to a friend’s place

Four easy Friendsgiving outfits laid out: jeans with cable knit, camel cords with black turtleneck, rust knit dress with denim jacket, olive satin skirt with grey sweatshirt
  1. 1. Good jeans, a cable knit. Dark jeans, a cream cable sweater, gold hoops and suede ankle boots. The classic, because it works every single time.
  2. 2. Camel cords, black turtleneck. Camel corduroy wide-leg trousers, a fitted black turtleneck and loafers. Warm, a little polished, very November.
  3. 3. Knit dress, denim jacket. A rust knit midi dress, a denim jacket and white sneakers. Pretty enough for photos, easy enough for the floor.
  4. 4. Satin skirt, soft sweatshirt. An olive satin midi skirt, a soft grey sweatshirt and white sneakers. The shine keeps it special, the sweatshirt keeps it cozy.

Hosting, or a dressier dinner

Four Friendsgiving outfits for hosting laid out: black jeans with burgundy vest, cream knit set, chocolate velvet trousers, floral midi dress with cardigan
  1. 5. The host’s uniform. Black wide-leg jeans, a burgundy knit vest over a white shirt and ballet flats. Roll the sleeves, tie the apron, still look put together.
  2. 6. The cream knit look. A cream knit sweater dress, or a sweater and skirt, with a thin brown belt and ankle boots. One soft color head to toe does all the work.
  3. 7. Velvet trousers. Chocolate velvet trousers, an ivory cami, a cream cardigan and low mules. For the friends who light all the candles.
  4. 8. Floral dress, chunky cardigan. A brown and rust floral midi dress, a chunky cardigan and knee boots. Soft and warm, and it feels like the season.

Which Friendsgiving guest are you?

Every table has the same four people. Dress for the one you are this year.

  • The one bringing the wine. Jeans, a soft knit and good boots. You are in and out of coats and cars, so keep it easy.
  • The host. Something you can cook in and wipe down, low shoes, and earrings that make the apron look intentional.
  • Straight from work. Keep your work trousers, swap the blazer for a cardigan, and add one warm color near your face.
  • The one staying until the last game. A long cardigan or an oversized sweater. You will end up on the sofa, and you should be comfortable there.

Dress for the floor, not the table

Friendsgiving seating is creative. Someone ends up on the sofa arm, someone on a cushion. Pick a skirt long enough to sit cross-legged in, or trousers that bend with you.

One color that feels like November

Rust, mustard, burgundy, olive or cream. One warm color near your face is enough, everything else can be jeans and something soft.

Bring a layer

Small apartments get warm fast, and walks home get cold. A cardigan or a denim jacket solves both.

If you’re hosting

Wear something washable that you can roll up, and keep your shoes low. Put on lipstick right before the doorbell. That’s the whole trick.
