Thanksgiving is a long day in a warm house. You help in the kitchen, sit for hours, hug everyone twice and end up on the sofa with pie. The outfit has to do all of that with you, and still look pretty in the family photo.

This is the day for a knit dress, an elastic-back skirt or trousers with a soft waistband. Nothing that pinches when you sit. You want to think about the people at the table, not about your zip.

Rust, camel, cream, deep green, a warm brown. These colors look like the season and are kind in every kind of light, from the kitchen window to candlelight. One warm color near your face is enough.
Layers for a warm kitchen
Houses get hot when the oven has been on since morning. A cardigan or a soft blazer over a lighter top means you can cool down without changing your whole look. Sleeves you can push up are a small gift to yourself.
Shoes you can stand in
You will be on your feet more than you think. Flats, loafers or a low block heel. If shoes come off at the door, wear the nice socks.
One small pretty thing
Gold earrings, a ribbon in your hair, a favorite ring. A small detail says you dressed for the day, even when the rest is all comfort.
